Tranquil scene of the ocean seen through pine trees with clouds in the sky.

Wind In The Pines

There’s a sound like no other —
The wind in the pines —
Yet similar to that of a whisper;
Secrets among trees
In a language their own
Telling of a time before us.

It sounds a little like waves
Crashing on the shore
Where we took our first piscine steps;
Our future on the horizon
We wondered what’s there,
And dreamed of impossible things.

Now it sounds like a sigh
From long office days,
Wondering where we got it all wrong;
We are not meant to be
Where the lighting is harsh,
And stale as a break room doughnut.

Not unlike the sound of sand
In an upturned glass,
Each golden grain counting;
Our end of days coming,
We watch in remorse,
And wish we could turn it all over.

There’s a sound like no other —
The wind in the pines —
Hush, and take a listen;
As our souls slip on,
To join the confluence,
And whisper of times before us.

This poem came to me as I listened to the wind in the pines. It is a sound I absolutely love next to that of waves. This is one of those poems that I wrote the initial idea down, but then refined it. Words were adjusted and line lengths changed for flow, and as I did that, I noticed something of a linear timeframe forming. So then I considered the first stanza and thought of a way to talk about human history or even a singular life.

I like how this one took form, and that harsh stanza in the middle. Because the working life is harsh, making our lives go by quick, until you’re staring at the last hours wondering where it all went. I also like how the last stanza compliments the first. The other thing I tried was to use words to mimic the whisper of the wind.

By the way, I have been writing a lot more nature themed poems lately, because I have been considering putting together a nature themed collection or chapbook! ::hint, hint:: ::wink, wink::

As always, thank you for reading! 😊
