Post-Consumer Byproducts

My debut poetry book, Between The Dark and The Light, was published on December 10, 2024. It is wild to me that it has been out a couple of months already! My intention was to celebrate by sharing a poem from the book on the 10th. That day came and went as I was caught up in all the other things that life requires.

Without further ado, here is a selection from my book.

*Content Guidance: mentions of abuse and self-harm — not graphic, but it is a difficult subject.

Post-Consumer Byproducts

We are made from recycled bits
Of generational trauma,
Passed down and regurgitated,
But made anew
With the intention to carry on.

Oh, how we strive to break free —
To shed old scabs,
Cover the screaming blemishes,
That blur the lines
Between abused and abuser.

The healing,
Even under band-aids —
Still leave the scars
Of painful memories,
Self-inflicted and otherwise.

I’m considering sharing a poem from my book on the 10th (or near) every month until its year anniversary. I have some plans on that date which may include daily audio readings of the book. We’ll see!

If you liked this poem and would like to purchase a copy of the book, it is available in paperback or ebook at most major places you can buy books. You can find your favorite shop here: https://books2read.com/rwilliamparmenter

As always, thank you for reading!

  • Desert Rain

A little free form bit to capture what I saw, felt, and smelled the other day. Rain in the desert has a distinct smell, with mostly that of the earthy, peppery scent of the creosote bush. Something I will miss when we leave the desert.

  • Wind In The Pines

This poem came to me as I listened to the wind in the pines. It is a sound I absolutely love next to that of waves. This is one of those poems that I wrote the initial idea down, but then refined it. Words were adjusted and line lengths changed for flow, and as I did that, I noticed something of a linear timeframe forming. So then I considered the first stanza and thought of a way to talk about human history or even a singular life.

  • Winter Solstice

It is such a dark time of year in many ways. The actual Winter Solstice brings the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. That is because the Earth’s axial tilt, or obliquity, positions us further from the sun. It is also cold and we tend to stay in.

    August Update

Summer draws to a close and I don’t mind. We’re upon my favorite season! Fall has always been so magical to me, and I can’t wait to dive into all things autumnal. However, I want to still honor this summer of change and growth. While my writing and art have been mostly stagnant, I did manage to write a few poems. Also, I grabbed a lovely shot of clouds the other day which is the featured image of this post.

    Season 41, Episode 8: Dissociation

My book has been out in the world for five months! This poem is a selection from the book. As you may have guessed, it is about a typical day where I dissociate from everything around me. I’m floating through the world, not really attached to my body, and watching everything as if I’m watching TV. If you’ve never experienced it, it is a strange sensation.
